It will still protect your computer but will no longer receive updates. If you want a free anti-virus I recommend in order of popularity, but please choose the right one for you (install only one):
1. AVG Free
a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)
b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses
Cons: low virus detection
2. Avast!
a. Real-time protection
b. It has an option to delete a virus once found
c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.
Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface
3. Avira AntiVir
a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG
b. It’s cute umbrella icon
c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses
Cons: A very sluggish update
For free anti-spyware I would recommend Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware.
The program you are using is asking for money to allow you to have your auto updater working again.
And ‘no’ your protection has not stopped.Only it’s ability to update after that point is the line drawn.
If you pay them you are buying the right to update your program without doing anything.[not a bad choice as most have no idea at all on how to manually update]
The actual definitions[files] that you need/desire are on the site and can be found by me,so you can too. They are free and are there for downloading as you see fit and when you see fit.
You must manually download them and then manually insert them into your actual programs files folder that houses so said needed[.vdf {for example} ] files.
But if you wish a list of good free antiviruses here’s mine.No offence meant to any program left out.
Avira[aka AntiVir]
Avast
AVG[Avg 8 offers much more but uses much more resources than 7.5]
A Squared[not a real time scanner but does the most with the least resources if set up properly]
A safe system[or reasonably safe] is one that has had a fresh install of an operating system[when offline] and has had all holes known to windows plugged[research it] then all good safety programs installed. Then after a few reboots and drivers are set right then you can try to update the system.
If you ever try to make a computer safe by installing programs after a while of being on line and surfing then you are walking up a steep hill without shoes.
I know of no program that can make one safe after you have been surfing that can or will work 100% to make you safe ever.
Many claim it but I have never seen this in practice ever.
When free trial ends, the Norton will not update its virus definition files so your PC will not be able to detect the latest virus that appear.

Avast can do a boot time scan before windows start to remove any stubborn viruses/rootkits. ( other anti-virus do not have such a feature )
